The excitement is ramping up for Saturday’s classic super middleweight boxing championship. Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders don’t seem to know the definition of the word loss, which makes things even more interesting.
If the trend of the online bets is any indication of how this boxing match will go, Alvarez will pull away late. Alvarez — or Canelo, as he is universally known by his first name in the boxing world — opened at -590 but has extended to -700 in the boxing betting lines. Saunders has gone from +400 to +450. The chance of a draw in the three-way odds has gone from +2500 to +2200.
Canelo (55-1-2, 37 KOs) hasn’t lost since a Sept. 2013 fight against Floyd Mayweather, and Saunders (30-0-0, 14 KOs) has never lost a fight in his 12-year professional fighting career. While the English native Saunders currently holds the WBO super middleweight title, Canelo holds the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring championships.
Canelo has won world titles in four weight classes ranging from the light middleweight class to the light heavyweight class, and the Mexican national had his eyes locked in on the unified super middleweight belt for more than a year now. The fight was supposed to occur a year ago in Las Vegas, but COVID-19 had other plans. It’ll now be contested in Dallas on Saturday.
Ramping up the passion, Saunders blew off a media event on Tuesday both fighters were scheduled to attend. Instead, he touted himself via social media channels.
The label of world’s undisputed super middleweight boxing champion is on the line, and both competitors want it on their résumé.
