The Masters Tournament is back in the spring, where it began in March 1934 when Horton Smith won the first one. Soon after, the tournament was moved to early April and it stayed there for good with only two interruptions. Only World War II (1943-45) and last year’s global pandemic were able to move the Augusta, Ga.-based tournament from its position in the spring. The war cancelled it for three years, and last year’s global pandemic postponed it to the fall.
With the azaleas blooming once again, there is a feeling of normalcy this week at the Masters — at least as much as can be expected in this pandemic-infected world we live in.
In last fall’s postponed version of the Masters, Dustin Johnson captured the illustrious green jacket for the first time, joining one of golf’s most elite clubs. He tops the latest Masters betting odds to win it all again, but the competition is close.
Along with Johnson, 17 past winners are in the field this week. Along with three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson (2004, 2006, 2010), Johnson joins the following past green jacket winners:
- Bernhard Langer (1985, 1993)
- Larry Mize (1987)
- Sandy Lyle (1988)
- Ian Woosnam (1991)
- Fred Couples (1992)
- Jose Maria Olazabal (1994, 1999)
- Vijay Singh (2000)
- Mike Weir (2003)
- Zach Johnson (2007)
- Charl Schwartzel (2011)
- Bubba Watson (2012, 2014)
- Adam Scott (2013)
- Jordan Spieth (2015)
- Danny Willett (2016)
- Sergio Garcia (2017)
- Patrick Reed (2018)
Bryson DeChambeau enters the week leading the 2020-21 FedEx Cup points race (1,565 points), but Justin Thomas (1,508) isn’t far behind. Nobody else is above 1,300 points in the competition, which concludes in early September.
