Opening Day for the 2022 Major League Baseball season is set to kick off Thursday afternoon, which is great for MLB betting.

While many will be jumping to MLB betting lines before the season starts it’s a good idea to get in on some futures.

The American League has plenty of hopefuls in terms of who to look at to win the Cy Young award.

American League Cy Young Odds

PlayerOdds (as of April 6)
Gerrit Cole+425
Shane Bieber+800
Lucas Giolito+1100
Robbie Ray+1200
Dylan Cease+1600
Lance McCullers Jr.+1600

AL Cy Young Tickets & Handle

Robbie Ray took home the award in the 2021 season and is sitting at +1200 to repeat this year at the BetMGM online sportsbook.

Ray received the award as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays and parlayed that into a five-year contract with the Seattle Mariners this offseason, which is worth up to $115 million dollars.

There’s been plenty of betting action so far, but the most interest has gone to Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani made his MLB debut back in 2018 with Angeles and has taken the league by storm, already having won the AL Rookie of the Year in 2018 and AL MVP in 2021.

Ohtani presents a fascinating case because although he doesn’t boast the best MLB odds (+2000) to win the Cy Young this season, he still is bringing in 13.6% of the tickets which leads the category, with his 12.8% of the handle not far behind the leader.

New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole is the current favorite at +425 with him coming in second in ticket percentage at 11.8 and third in handle at 12.2%, just behind Ohtani.

Others that are bringing in high ticket percentages with the season about to get underway are Dylan Cease of the Chicago White Sox at 11.4%, Justin Verlander of the Houston Astros at 8.2%, and Cease’s teammate Lucas Giolito at 7.1%.

Giolito also boasts the highest handle percentage right now where he’s coming in at 14.9%. Alek Manoah of the Blue Jays should be someone you keep an eye on as well, and his current handle is 5.8%.
