  • Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are dominating the headlines.
  • Argentina must stop Antoine Griezmann to win.
  • Argentina should give Messi the send-off he deserves.

France dismantled a continent’s dream when they beat Morocco in the FIFA World Cup semifinals, and now the small matter of Lionel Messi and Argentina is all that stands in the way of back-to-back World Cup titles for Les Blues.

France is on the verge of becoming only the third team in history to win consecutive World Cups, while Argentina is looking to give their talisman Messi, the send-off he deserves.

Can Didier Deschamp’s men ruin Messi’s final dance, or will he cement his status as the greatest of all time?

Argentina vs. France Analysis

Argentina and France are the last two teams standing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and one of them will leave the pitch  Sunday as world champions.

Argentina played its best match of the tournament to beat Croatia 3-0 in the semifinals, while France breached Morocco’s rigid defense twice to book themselves a seat at soccer’s highest table.

Argentina vs. France; Lionel Messi vs. Kylian Mbappe; the current vs. the future. This is the heavyweight finals match that an immensely enjoyable World Cup tournament was crying out for and what it thoroughly deserves.

As the odds reflect, there’s almost nothing that separates the two teams.

Both teams lost one game in the Group Stages, with Argentina’s shocking loss to Saudi Arabia and France’s loss to Tunisia souring their perfect records. Of course, both teams are also built around two brilliant individuals, Messi and Mbappe, and that is undoubtedly the biggest storyline surrounding this match.

Teammates fighting for the limelight at PSG; Messi, at 35, is looking to finally win the World Cup in what is his last tournament, and Mbappe could win consecutive World Cup titles at just 23 years old. As if that wasn’t enough, both players have scored five goals, the most in the tournament, and are in the running to win the Golden Boot.

It’s almost impossible to separate the game from these two players, but it’s important to remember that there will be 10 other players for each team on the pitch on Sunday.

Argentina played their best game against Croatia to book their place in the finals. The team pressed high, forced errors, played aggressively on and off the ball, and took their chances in front of goal.

On the other hand, I think France was relatively lucky to get past Morocco. The Atlas Lions had the majority of the possession and were the better team for most of the match. Their downfall was a lack of precision in front of goal, which is where France’s strength lies.

While Argentina has come on the boil slowly throughout the tournament, France proved against England and Morocco that they don’t need to play well to win games.

If Argentina wants to win this game, they must ensure that Antione Griezmann gets as little time on the ball as possible. He has been France’s player of the tournament to me. So far, he has created 21 goal-scoring opportunities for his team and seems to pop up all over the pitch. The midfield battle will be won or lost on how successful Argentina is at shackling the Frenchman.

Ultimately, this game is too tight to call.

However, like many people worldwide, I can’t help but hope that Messi gets the perfect end to his story with Argentina. Is this going to be his final swan song, or is Mbappe about to take the reigns as soccer’s biggest star?

This is the World Cup final that many craved – a personal duel between two of the best players in the world. Which one will provide the moment of magic to win it all?

It’s got to be Messi… Doesn’t it?
