Before joining the NHL, Karlsson played in Europe on the Swedish team Frolunda HC.
Since being drafted into the NHL, Erik has gone on to play in the NHL All-Star Game six times, as well as being selected for the NHL First All-Star Team four times. He also took home the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2012 and 2015, as well as the Viking Award in 2012, 2016, and 2017.
What began as a one-year deal with the San Jose Sharks got serious after the team re-signed Erik to an 8-year deal in 2019. Karlsson is set to earn $92 million from this agreement.
Erik and his wife, Melinda, launched an anti-bullying charity called Can't Dim My Light. This initiative has partnered with Proud to be Me to help build a more inclusive society.
