The battle for the second spot in Group D of the FIFA World Cup comes down to Denmark and Australia, who will play Wednesday in what is an elimination game for both teams. Of course, that’s only if France beats Tunisia, which is the expected result. 

Denmark was poor against Tunisia in their opening game but was unfortunate to lose only 2-1 to France. Australia was beaten badly by France but came away with a 1-0 win over Tunisia to move into the second qualifying spot. 

Will the Danes finally find their goal-scoring form? Or, can the Socceroos do the unthinkable and eliminate one of Europe’s best teams?

Australia vs. Denmark Analysis

Denmark’s loss to France, combined with Tunisia’s loss to Australia, has left the second spot in Group D wide open. France will advance regardless of Wednesday’s results, but Denmark has to win against Australia if they want to go through to the next round.

Kasper Hjulmand’s side was poor in their opening game, and despite an improved performance against France, they have only one goal and one point in the competition so far.

The Danes know that anything other than a win, they will be sent packing, so I expect them to come out with a bit more vigor and attacking intent than we’ve seen so far. Hjulmand should utilize Martin Braithwaite and Kasper Dolberg together rather than the misfiring Andreas Cornelius for more of a threat going forward.

Despite the initial humiliating loss to France in the opening match, Australia has actually been a pleasant surprise to watch. Graham Arnold will probably stick with the team that beat Tunisia and could follow a similar winning format.

The Socceroos got an early goal through Mitchell Duke and spent the rest of the game defending their socks off. I think they will try to do the same here, sitting deep and whipping crosses into the box on the break.

Ultimately, Denmark has underperformed in this tournament, but this team tends to turn it on when it’s needed most. Australia knows that they simply need a draw, so Denmark is going to have to rely on Christian Eriksen to find a way through the back line.

Denmark is the heavy favorite against Australia, but they need a win, and I think this could leave them a little light in defense. 

I think Australia will get a goal, but Denmark should take all three points.
