Belgium vs. Canada Analysis

Much has been expected of this Red Devils team over the years, but they’ve yet to deliver. This is the last opportunity for many of Belgium’s current crop of players to win a World Cup, and whether they use that as motivation or crumble under the pressure will determine their success.

Roberto Martinez undoubtedly has one of the most talented squads in the world at his disposal, with the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, ​​Youri Tielemans, Axel Witsel, and more.

This team has a wealth of attacking players but can be unbalanced, and there’s a relatively aging defense with Toby Alderweireld (33 years old) and Jan Vertonghen (35) at its core. This is the weakness Canada has to exploit if they are going to be successful. 

Canada’s World Cup drought is finally over, and this squad is improving rapidly. Manager John Herdman has a flexible set-up, but he likes his team to defend stoutly and use players like Alphonso Davies and Tajon Buchanan to break with speed.

This is a well-balanced side, and the biggest threat undoubtedly comes from the speed of Davies and Buchanan on the flanks. There’s also the expert finishing of Cyle Larin and Jonathan David upfront. 

The draw wasn’t kind to Canada, and despite the obvious improvements, a win against Belgium is a difficult ask.

I expect this to be a high-scoring game, as both teams have exceptional attacking talent and lack solid defense.

Belgium is the favorite for good reason, and they should beat a vastly less experienced team on the big stage. I’m going with a 3-1 win for Belgium.
