Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers suffered a torn Achilles tendon before the start of the team’s training camp. He returned only five months later and is now playing in Super Bowl 56.
BetMGM has a selection of Super Bowl prop bets for Akers as he heads into the Super Bowl. He’s assumed the lead-back role for the past three games and has had mixed results, but I believe there might be some hidden value in some of his props.
Below, I’ll analyze Akers’ playoff run and how I think he’ll perform in the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl LVI Info
Before I get started, here’s some important information about the game.
- Date: Sunday, Feb. 13th
- Time: 6:30 P.M. EST
- Venue: SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA
Akers’ Return
Cam Akers’ first game back from injury was in the season finale versus the San Francisco 49ers. He only had five rushing attempts.
Akers has taken back the lead role for LA in the playoffs and has averaged 18 rush attempts per game. He hasn’t been used much in the passing game and has totaled only five receptions in the three games.
In the Wild Card round, one of those passes was a 40-yard bomb from Odell Beckham Jr., so there is precedent for getting Akers involved downfield.
Cam Akers Under 63.5 Rushing Yards (-115)
This is my favorite Akers prop for Super Bowl 56. Akers has only averaged 50.3 yards on the ground per game in the playoffs, and he’ll be going up against the Cincinnati Bengals‘ fifth-ranked rush defense. This is the same defense that held Derrick Henry to only 62 yards in the divisional round.
With rushing totals of 48, 48, and 55 in his last three games, I’m not confident in Akers getting over 63.5 in this game unless he gets a significant increase in usage.
Cam Akers Receptions Over 2.5 (+110)
Akers is only averaging two targets per game in the postseason, but I love the value in this play.
This Bengals defense is very much like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense. Both are strong against the run (fifth and third, respectively) and weak again the pass (26th and 21st, respectively).
In the Rams’ divisional-round matchup with the Buccaneers, Akers caught three receptions for 20 yards. He rushed for 48 yards on 24 carries, only averaging two yards per carry.
I see this matchup playing out the same way, where the Bengals shut down the rushing game and force Matthew Stafford to throw the ball often to keep up with Joe Burrow. I wouldn’t be surprised if Akers had three or four catches in the flat.
Cam Akers Over 16.5 Rushing Attempts (-120)
If this game plays out like the Buccaneers game, I expect Akers to have over 16.5 rush attempts. He tallied 24 attempts in Tampa Bay, and the Rams holding a big lead at halftime had a lot to do with that.
With the Bucs and Bengals having similar defenses, I think the Rams can find success against Cincinnati’s weak pass defense and get out to an early lead. The Rams have outscored opponents 48-13 in the first half during the playoffs. If they continue that trend, Akers could get a lot of touches to start the second half.
