Step 2: Bet Amount

Add your stake in U.S. dollars. This can include cents.

Bet Amount: $20

Step 3: Payout & To Win

Check these fields for the total payout (Payout) and profit (To Win) with those odds and stake.

Payout: $36
To Win: $16

Step 4: Implied Odds & Converted Odds

If you’d like, you can find the implied probability and other odds formats.

The American Odds are the same as those in the Enter Odds field, which will always use American Odds as the default.

  • Implied Odds: 55.56%

Understanding Odds Formats: American, Decimal, & Fractional

Understanding Odds Formats: American, Decimal, & Fractional
In the United States, BetMGM uses American odds. However, you can view other odds formats by using the calculator. Here’s an overview of each format:

American Odds

American odds focus around a baseline value of $100. This doesn’t mean all bets must have a stake of $100.

Minus Odds: Minus odds indicate the favorite. In the example above, the Chicago Bears (-125) are the moneyline favorite. To profit $100 from a Bears’ win, your stake must be $125.

Positive Odds: Positive odds indicate the underdog. In the example above, the Detroit Lions (+105) are the moneyline underdog. If your stake is $100, you can profit $105 from a Lions’ win.

Decimal Odds

Decimal odds — popular in other regions of the world, including throughout Europe — focus around a baseline of $1. Similarly to American odds, this doesn’t mean all bets must have a stake of $1.

Decimal odds show the total payout of a bet for each $1 of stake. The total payout includes stake.

Decimal Odds Formula: Bet Amount × Decimal Odds = Total Payout

The Bears’ American moneyline odds of -125 are 1.8 in decimal odds: $20 x 1.8 = $36.

How do you know which side is the favorite or underdog in decimal odds? Below 2.00 is a favorite. Underdog is 2.00 and above.

Fractional Odds

Fractional odds — also popular in other regions in the world, in addition to horse racing betting in the United States — is simply profit over stake.

Fractional Odds Formula: Profit / Stake

The Bears’ American moneyline odds of -125 are 4/5 in fractional odds: $4 profit for a $5 stake. Or, using the same $20 stake above, a $16 profit for a $20 stake (i.e., 4/5).

What is the Implied Probability in Sports Betting?

Implied probability is a conversion of the odds into a percentage. If the Bears are a -125 moneyline favorite against the Lions, the odds imply the Bears have a 55.56% chance of winning.

The BetMGM Sports Betting Odds Calculator automatically calculates implied probability for you. You could use it, for example, to find a certain type of bet with a probability of at least 55%. Alternatively, you could find a bet with lower probability but longer plus odds that could return a larger payout.

Why Implied Probability Matters

Implied probability can be an additional way to help a bettor find value.

If you believe — through your own analysis or data gathering — the Bears have 60% chance of beating the Lions, the Bears’ moneyline odds of -125 are considered good value given the implied probability of 55.56%.

If the implied probability was 60%, the odds would be -150. With a stake of $20, the profit is $13.33 on a bet with -150. At -125, the profit is higher at $16.

Sports Betting Odds FAQs

What’s the Difference Between Payout and To Win?

Payout is the total amount a bettor receives after winning a bet. The “To Win” or profit amount is what a player profits from a bet.

If your stake is $20 with odds of -125, the payout is $36. This amount includes your stake of $20.

To Win (Profit): $36 – $20 = $16

What Does Even Money (+100) Mean?

If you place an even-money bet — with +100 American odds — your stake will be identical to your profit. This also means your total payout is exactly twice the amount of your stake.

For example: $10 stake for a $20 payout, or $10 profit

How Do Spread Odds Work?

Some bets only include odds (e.g., -125). Others — including most notably spread bets — include a number and odds.

For example: If the Bears are -125 moneyline favorites against the Lions, the spread might be Bears -1.5 (and Lions +1.5). To win the -1.5 spread bet, the Bears must win by at least two points. Alternatively, the Lions must win the game, tie, or lose the game by one point to win the +1.5 spread bet.

Accompanying the spread are odds. If the Bears are -1.5, the odds might be -110.

The BetMGM Sports Betting Odds Calculator works for any type of bet. It could be moneyline, spread, over/under total (e.g., total points), or player prop (e.g., passing yards in a game).
