You can see where the bets are going at the BetMGM Sportsbook. Track real-time public betting trends for the percentage of bets (straight and parlays) across the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and other sports.
Shows the popularity of each side of a spread for the game. For example, if the Chicago Cubs have 75% of the spread (or run line) bets against the St. Louis Cardinals, 75% of all bets placed (on either side of the spread) are on the Cubs to cover. The remaining 25% of tickets are on the Cardinals to cover.
Shows the popularity of each side of an over/under total for the game. For example, the Over has 90% of the Over/Under Total bets in a game between the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles, 90% of all bets placed (on either side of the Over/Under Total). The remaining 10% is on the Under.
Shows the popularity of each moneyline for the game. For example, if the New York Knicks have 62% of the moneyline bets against the Boston Celtics, 62% of all moneyline bets placed (on either team) are on the Knicks to win the game. The remaining 38% is on the Celtics.
BetMGM bettors could use public splits — if available — as part of their betting strategy. Here’s a look at how the splits may be used and/or interpreted:
To fade the public, you place a bet on the side with the overwhelming minority of bets.
For example: If 89% of the bets are on the Kansas City Chiefs’ spread (-4.5) against the Denver Broncos, the public is overwhelmingly favoring the Chiefs to cover 4.5 points (i.e., win by at least five points). Betting on the Broncos — +4.5 with only 11% of the bets would be fading the public.
Bettors could, for example, compare public betting splits to trends to determine if one team has been terrible against the spread this season but remains a popular pick. That could present betting value.
When odds change for a betting market, it’s called line movement.
For example: The Carolina Hurricanes opened as -250 moneyline favorites against the Pittsburgh Penguins. If the Hurricanes’ moneyline odds change to -200 prior to the start of the game, the moneyline moved.
Bettors could compare line movement to public betting splits to determine if, potentially, the line shifted as a result of increased betting interest on one side of a market.
In the example above, if the Hurricanes had only 10% of the moneyline bets prior to the line movement from -250 to -200 but entered the game with 50% of the bets — a 40-point movement in ticket share — bettors may interpret the movement as a result of the previously low interest in the Hurricanes’ moneyline.
Bettors can also use BetMGM’s Odds Calculator to calculate implied probability and compare against what value they believe odds to have.
Public betting splits show the percentage of bets on each side of a betting market. It’s the distribution of the volume of bets made by all BetMGM customers for that market.
Fading the public is a strategy when a bet is placed against the overwhelming majority of bettors.
Line movement is the adjustment of spreads, totals, moneylines, and other odds by the BetMGM Sportsbook prior to the event start.
Reverse line movement happens when odds move in the opposite direction of the public percentage.
Yes, public betting splits can move from the time the betting markets open until the time the markets close. Splits change as bets are placed and the data is updated.
The most popular betting markets at BetMGM are typically spread, total, and moneyline. Here’s a look at how each market works in NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL betting:
If you bet on the Los Angeles Rams spread -3.5 against the Seattle Seahawks, the Rams must win the game by at least four points to cover the spread. If you bet on the Seahawks spread +3.5, the Seahawks must lose the game by three points or fewer (or win the game).
If the spread is a whole number that is the exact margin of victory, the bet is a push and your money is refunded.
If you bet Over 48.5 in a game between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears, the two teams must combine for at least 49 points to hit the Over. If you bet Under 48.5, the teams must combine for 48 or fewer points.
If the total is a whole number that is the exact point total, your bet is a push and your money is refunded.
If you bet on the New England Patriots odds (-150) to beat the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots must win the game to win the bet. If you bet on the Bills odds (+120), the Bills must win.
If the game ends in a tie, your bet is a push and your money is refunded.
If you bet on the Boston Celtics spread -5.5 against the New York Knicks, the Celtics must win the game by at least six points to cover the spread. If you bet on the Knicks spread +5.5, the Knicks must lose the game by five points or fewer (or win the game).
If the spread is a whole number that is the exact margin of victory, the bet is a push and your money is refunded.
If you bet Over 224.5 in a game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors, the two teams must combine for at least 225 points to hit the Over. If you bet Under 224.5, the teams must combine for 224 or fewer points.
If the total is a whole number that is the exact point total, your bet is a push and your money is refunded.
If you bet on the Milwaukee Bucks odds (-160) to beat the Miami Heat, the Bucks must win the game to win the bet. If you bet on the Heat’s odds (+135), the Heat must win.
If the game ends in a tie, your bet is a push and your money is refunded.
If you bet on the Los Angeles Dodgers run line -1.5 against the San Diego Padres, the Dodgers must win the game by at least two runs to cover the run line. If you bet on the Padres run line +1.5, the Padres must lose the game by one run (or win the game).
If the run line is a whole number that is the exact margin of victory, the bet is a push and your money is refunded.
If you bet Over 8.5 in a game between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, the two teams must combine for at least nine runs to hit the Over. If you bet Under 8.5, the teams must combine for 8 or fewer runs.
If the total is a whole number that is the exact run total, your bet is a push and your money is refunded.
If you bet on the Atlanta Braves odds (-145) to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, the Braves must win the game to win the bet. If you bet on the Phillies odds (+120), the Phillies must win.
If you bet on the Edmonton Oilers spread -1.5 against the Vegas Golden Knights, the Oilers must win the game by at least two goals to cover the puck line. If you bet on the Golden Knights spread +1.5, the Golden Knights must lose the game by one goal (or win the game).
If the puck line is a whole number that is the exact margin of victory, the bet is a push and your money is refunded.
If you bet Over 6.5 in a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens, the two teams must combine for at least seven goals to hit the Over. If you bet Under 6.5, the teams must combine for 6 or fewer goals.
If the total is a whole number that is the exact goal total, your bet is a push and your money is refunded.
If you bet on the Colorado Avalanche’s odds (-155) to beat the Dallas Stars, the Avalanche must win the game to win the bet. If you bet on the Stars’ odds (+130), the Stars must win.
