In Week 7, Craig Bohl and his Wyoming Cowboys will take on the Fresno State Bulldogs. Both teams are off to a great start so far. Fresno State is currently sitting at 4-2 and ranks third in passing yards per game. The Cowboys, on the other hand, rank 12th in passing yards allowed per game.

Both teams are in the MWC, so this will be a meaningful matchup for them. College football odds have the Bulldogs as 3.5-point favorites. The outcome of this game will say a lot about how the Mountain West will shape up this season.

Let’s take a look at what we can expect out of Craig Bohl and the Cowboys.

The 2021 Wyoming Cowboys

First, let’s take a look at what the Cowboys have done so far this year. Based on their record alone, the teams appear to be pretty evenly matched. But, if you’re Craig Bohl, you have to be a little concerned about Fresno State and quarterback Jake Haener.

Wyoming can’t just put eight men in the box and sell out on the run. If they do, Fresno State will throw the ball over the top of the secondary, and things will get ugly quickly for Wyoming.

This makes things tricky for the Cowboys because the run game is what beat them last week. Brad Roberts had 33 carries for 140 yards and a TD against the Cowboys. The result was a 24-14 loss for the University of Wyoming.

This matchup is going to test Craig Bohl’s mettle as the Cowboys’ coach.

Stats and Trends

Wyoming has yet to cover the spread this season when they’re the underdog by 3.5 or more.

The Wyoming Cowboys are also 50% for hitting the over in college football betting this year.

To me, the most eye-catching stat is that Wyoming is 4-0 when their team has more than 319.2 yards in offensive production. Unfortunately, that’s the exact average amount of yardage the Fresno State Bulldogs are giving up to opponents this year.

The Cowboys also have an opportunity to win this game when it comes to ball security. Wyoming is averaging two fewer turnovers per game than Fresno State is causing against their opponents. Also, Fresno State has 15 giveaways so far this season.

That’s one of the perils of relying so heavily on the pass. If Fresno State can’t run the ball, Wyoming will have more opportunities to create turnovers.

Who Wins Between the Cowboys and Bulldogs?

I believe that there will be tons of offensive production in this game, but turnovers will be the deciding factor. In their last game against Hawaii, the Bulldogs gave up 17 4th-quarter points because of turnovers and inconsistent play in the secondary. This week, I believe that they’ll find themselves in a war of attrition against a Cowboys’ team that will want to run the ball and chew up the clock.

Both teams will rack up a lot of yards, but I would take the under if I was betting this game. Much like the Hawaii game, I think Fresno State will rely on their passing game too much and make some mistakes. The Wyoming Cowboys should be able to capitalize.

My prediction: Cowboys 24 Bulldogs 21

Round ‘Em Up

Craig Bohl and the Cowboys have their work cut out for them this week. It will undoubtedly be a fun one to watch.
