  • Brazil is the favorite to win the World Cup.
  • Serbia’s defense won’t be able to handle Brazil’s attackers.
  • Alexandar Mitrovic should get a goal for Serbia.

The tournament favorites Brazil open their 2022 FIFA World Cup with a mouthwatering match-up against a resilient Serbia.

Will this match be the start of a title-winning run for Brazil for the first time in 20 years? Brazil has reached the semi-final only once and has fallen to three quarter-final exits since 2002.

Coach Tite knows that anything but ultimate glory this year will be seen as a failure. Can his team handle this kind of expectation?

Brazil vs. Serbia Analysis

Brazil made a statement in their qualifying campaign. The team was unbeaten and won all but three of their 17 games. They scored 38 goals and conceded just five. Coach Tite has now had a full four-year cycle between World Cups to get the best from his squad, and he’s done just that.

He has kept the country’s iconic “Ginga Style” soccer while implementing an intense press that isn’t usually associated with this team. Brazil is unusually balanced in all areas this time around, with one of the best keepers in the world in Liverpool’s Alisson, the monumental pairing of Marquinhos and Thiago Silva at the back, and the steel of Casemiro and the attacking flair of Lucas Paqueta in midfield.

Then, of course, there’s Neymar, Richarlison, Raphinha, and Vinicius Junior to cause chaos up front. This is a team that can score plenty of goals while conceding few.

They do, however, come up against the toughest opponent in their Group in Dragan Stojkovic’s Serbia.

Serbia can be a little erratic in defense, but up front, there’s in-form Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic alongside Dusan Vlahovic, with the immense Dusan Tadic tucked in behind them. Two pacey wing-backs, Andrija Zivkovic and Filip Kostic provide speed and width on the flanks too.

Dragan Stojkovic sometimes shifts his formation to 5-3-2 against stronger teams, and he might have to against Brazil to try stifle their attack, but they won’t manage a complete shutout against this team.

If he’s fully fit, I expect Mitrovic to get a goal, but ultimately Brazil’s attack is simply too good for the Serbian defense.

Serbia will have games to show their attacking talent against Cameroon and Switzerland, but against Brazil, I see them coming off second-best.

I’m going with a 3-1 win to Brazil.
