It’s Week 13 of the NFL season, and the MVP race is wide open. Oddsmakers have Tom Brady as the frontrunner, with Josh Allen and Aaron Rodgers trailing. Here are the latest odds for the top five MVP candidates, according to the NFL odds today at BetMGM.
- Tom Brady (+275)
- Josh Allen (+450)
- Aaron Rodgers (+750)
- Patrick Mahomes (+800)
- Kyler Murray (+800)
Josh Allen could boost his MVP odds by taking down the New England Patriots in what could be one of the best games on the NFL Week 13 schedule. Read on to find out how Allen stacks up against the other MVP candidates in 2021.
Monday’s Patriots vs. Bills Game Could Boost Josh Allen’s Odds
I don’t think Josh Allen has any chance of winning MVP if the Bills can’t win the AFC East. The last player to win the MVP on a team that didn’t win their division was Adrian Peterson in 2012, who had a historic season.
Currently, the Bills sit one game back of the New England Patriots. However, the Patriots vs. Bills game on Monday Night Football could go a long way toward determining the MVP. The Bills are favorites in Week 13, but they’ll be going up against a defense that leads the league in interceptions.
The Patriots’ defense has turned it on lately. New England has been averaging 3.7 sacks per game over the past three games. That’s the second-best mark in the NFL in that timeframe. If Allen can figure out Bill Belichick’s defense, that could go a long way with MVP voters.
Josh Allen Doesn’t Have Eye-Popping MVP Statistics
While Allen has undoubtedly been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL this year, his stats don’t build a strong case for MVP. A strong MVP candidate should lead the league in at least one statistical category, but Allen does not.
Allen ranks third in the NFL in touchdown passes, sixth in the NFL in passing yards, and 11th among qualified quarterbacks in yards per attempt. In each of the past three years, Allen has totaled at least eight rushing touchdowns. This year, he only has three.
Josh Allen has also thrown more interceptions than Brady, Rodgers, and Murray. Allen will have to turn it on in the final five games if he’s going to put up the kind of stats that win MVP awards.
Assessing Josh Allen’s MVP Odds in 2021
While Josh Allen has the second-best odds to win MVP in 2021, it would take a lot for him to win the award. I believe that he and the Bills will have to go 3-0 in their games against the Patriots and Buccanneers. Allen would also have to start filling the stat sheet with passing yards and touchdowns.
The Bills are certainly good enough to help Allen win the MVP award, but many things would have to go right. I think it’s more likely that Tom Brady leads the Buccanneers to the top spot in the NFC and secures his fourth MVP award. Do you believe that Josh Allen can win the MVP?
