- Croatia was poor in a goalless draw against Morocco.
- Canada had a positive game but lost 1-0 to Belgium.
- If Canada improves their finishing, I think they can beat Croatia.
Croatia opened their FIFA World Cup schedule against Morocco, and the 2018 semi-finalists had to settle for a point in what was a rather toothless display.
Canada came up against European heavyweights Belgium. Despite being the best team for most of the match, their lack of finesse in the final third let them down, and they lost 1-0.
Will Croatia come to the party against Canada? Or will Canada’s pace and youth prove too much for a sluggish Croatian team?

Canada vs. Croatia Analysis
The 2018 runners-up got off to a slow start in a goalless draw against Morocco. Zlatko Dalić must have been concerned by the complete lack of ideas in his team and how toothless they were in the final third.
There are few teams in the world that boast a better midfield than Croatia, with Marcelo Brozović, Mateo Kovačić, and Luka Modrić who, between them, have 319 caps to their name. So their lack of creativity was surprising.
Nikola Vlašić got his team’s only chance on target in the entire 90 minutes of play. Croatia did manage a clean sheet, and Morocco did not have much success on the ball, but this was a concerningly mediocre display from a team that is widely expected to advance.
Dalić’s team will be well aware that they face Belgium in their last game of the Group Stage, so anything but three points against a lively Canada will put them in a tough position.
While Croatian fans will be happy with a point after their team’s lethargic display, Canadian fans have the right to feel robbed as their team came away from their first game with empty pockets.

John Herdman’s men put in the best performance that I’ve seen at the tournament so far. The team came in as serious underdogs against Belgium, but they played with bravery throughout the game.
The Canadians played positive soccer with pace all over the pitch, and they constantly harried their opponents, who looked a little shell-shocked at the intensity.
Alphonso Davies had a tame penalty saved, and the Canadians registered 21 shots on the Belgian goal. Unfortunately, Belgium scored from what was their only real chance on goal.
Herdman’s team now knows that they can perform on the big stage, and the manner of their defeat should galvanize the team going forward. They simply have to improve in the final third and take the opportunities that they work hard to carve out.
All of the odds point towards a Croatia win here, but I can’t help but feel like the Canadians will run this aging team ragged. If they can sort out their accuracy in front of goal, I see Canada taking all three points here.
Canada vs. Croatia Game Result Odds
- Match Result: Canada (+250)
- Draw No Bet: Canada (+145)
- Over/Under Goals: Under 2.5 (-145)
- Canada to Win and Croatia Not to Score: (+450)
