Veric Nichols thought he had a good night on May 8 as Canelo Álvarez defeated Billy Joe Saunders with an eighth-round TKO. In reality, Nichols had no idea how good his night was.

Nichols, of Erie, Colo., placed five bets on BetMGM for the Canelo-Saunders match three days before the two squared off at AT&T Stadium in the most-attended indoor boxing match in U.S. history:

  • Alvarez by unanimous decision (+260)
  • Alvarez in rounds 7-12 (+185)
  • Under 11 total rounds (+110)
  • Alvarez by KO/TKO/Technical Decision or DQ (+100)
  • Alvarez 3-Way (-500)

Nichols won four of the five bets – losing only Alvarez’s unanimous decision – for a one-event profit of 63 percent. In placing the five bets, regardless of their outcomes, he also earned five additional entries for the BetMGM x DAZN – Canelo Sweepstakes. With his first free entry, given to all customers upon opting in for the promotion, Nichols had six total entries in the sweepstakes to win a travel package for the Haney-Linares fight on May 29.

The package included:

  • Round-trip airfare for two
  • 3-night accommodations at an MGM property of the winner’s choice
  • Two premium tickets to the Haney vs. Linares DAZN match

One of Nichols’ six entries was selected, turning a good night into an extraordinary night.

“When BetMGM first called to congratulate me on winning, I thought it was a friend pulling a prank,” Nichols said this week. “I never win anything like this. We are super excited to go to Vegas for the fight, and it is awesome to see BetMGM and DAZN put on a sweepstakes like this.”

Nichols will have premium seats for the fight at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. As of May 13, Devin Haney is a heavy favorite at -1000 (3-way) and -1200 (2-way).

The 22-year-old WBC lightweight champion is 25-0 (15 KOs) and six months removed from a successful title defense against Yuriorkis Gamboa in Florida last November. Linares, meanwhile, is a 35-year-old former three-division world champion who hasn’t fought since a fourth-round knockout of Carlos Morales in February 2020.
