Based on FC Porto’s lack of defensive quality and Manchester City’s strong metrics to begin the year, my Porto vs Man City prediction is the Man City Moneyline (-135).
From Porto’s perspective, Manchester City represents their most difficult opponent since the start of last year.
The team faced Nottingham Forest during last year’s Europa League. It’s difficult to glean much from those three matches, given some personnel absences and a red card in one match.
Manchester City and Nottingham Forest operated at complete opposite ends of the Premier League spectrum. Last year, City’s metrics dwarfed those of Porto’s Europa League foe.
In Premier League play, City recorded a +32.9 expected goal differential and a +24.3 post-shot xGDiff.
Forest completed the season with a -16 expected goal differential and -5 post-shot xGDiff.
The starkest contrast between these two English teams is the attacking quality. City led the Premier League in expected goals while Forest bettered only four teams.
So far this season, City has continued to demonstrate strong attacking quality. Albeit in a small sample, City created 3.9 xG and 5.2 post-shot xG against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.
Plus, many moons have passed since Porto experienced playing as a home underdog.
Not since February 2024 has Porto operated in that role. While the Portuguese side achieved a 1-0 win over Arsenal in that role, the current personnel looks wildly different.
Of the 11 players that started that match against Arsenal, only one started Porto’s most recent domestic fixture.
Porto held Arsenal to only 0.4 xG in that match and zero shots on target. However, City presents an exponentially more difficult challenge for the current defense.
Those factors lead me to predict City will travel to Portugal and take all three points.
