Auburn is the hottest team in the SEC as the college baseball season enters its final stretch of the regular season. The Tigers hit the road for Starkville this weekend, where they’ll try to continue their charge toward the top of the conference standings.

Starkville can be a particularly tough place for road teams to win. The road dynamic and the dominance of MSU ace Tomas Valincius appear to be the major factors in the sportsbook’s Game 1 odds. The Bulldogs are a pretty sizable home favorite.
Valincius is the real deal, carrying a 2.37 ERA and 92 strikeouts into this weekend’s series. He hasn’t given up more than three earned runs in an outing all season.
But Auburn can credibly make a claim to being the No. 1 team in the SEC, at least over the last few weeks. Since the beginning of April, the Tigers have won consecutive conference series over Arkansas, Kentucky, Florida, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M. Four of the five were ranked in the top 15 at the time of the series.
Auburn is getting it done on both sides of the ball. As a group, the pitching staff leads the SEC with a 3.33 ERA, while its 1.13 staff WHIP is No. 1 nationally.
As for the bats, Auburn has found its power in recent weeks, knocking 31 dingers since the start of the Florida series on April 16.
Mississippi State ranks 18th nationally (second in the SEC) with a .310 batting average. Paired with Valincius’ pitching, it does make the Bulldogs quite dangerous, at least for Game 1.
But given how Auburn has played over the last few weeks, it’s hard to imagine Auburn won’t get at least one game this weekend. If the Tigers can find another series win, it’ll be the first time Auburn has won six consecutive conference series since the mid 1990s.
