College baseball is dominated by the SEC, where the 12th or 13th best team in the league often has future MLB players and a postseason-worthy lineup.

Every once in a while, this creates a quirky outcome – a total falloff for the reigning national champion. If a championship team loses too much talent to the pros, it can be hard to rebound the following year in such a deep conference.

LSU became the latest victim of this trend in 2026. The Tigers won the 2025 national championship but finished 9-21 in SEC play in 2026, missing out on a regional birth.
