Georgia vs. Auburn: Series Preview

This is the must-watch series of the weekend – and it could be an Omaha preview.

Georgia has appeared near the top of the College World Series odds market for most of the season and enters this weekend’s finale riding a nine-game winning streak that spans back to April.

Meanwhile, Auburn has won six SEC series in a row, which is a program record dating back to the 1990s. The Tigers should also have an advantage in the starting pitching department in Game 1, with Jake Marciano (4-4, 2.71 ERA) working as the presumed starter against Georgia’s Joey Volchko (7-2, 4.44 ERA).

The X-factor here is Georgia’s motivation. The Bulldogs have already clinched the SEC regular-season title and are likely to earn a top-8 regional seed, setting up home-field advantage all the way to the CWS. That makes this Auburn series – and, to some extent, the upcoming SEC Tournament – more of a side quest for Georgia.

Don’t be surprised if Georgia elects to rotate in some bench players for their lineup this weekend.
