It’s virtually impossible to operate anywhere in the online sports betting space and not know what the transfer portal is. It’s transformed nearly every part of the college sports experience, from the fans to college football betting odds.

If you think back to five or 10 years ago, NCAA transfer policies were punitive. Players were often penalized for moving schools unless they were moving down a level or had attained graduate transfer status.

With the implementation of the transfer portal and much friendlier regulations around moving teams, transfers are now an intrinsic part of the sport. And the numbers are exploding.

Transfer Portal: 2022 Will Likely Be Another Huge Year NCAA Athlete Movement

Since the transfer portal was created in October 2018, its usage has skyrocketed.

According to NCAA data, 1,703 players entered the portal between August 1, 2019, and July 31, 2020. In transfer portal parlance, this is known as the 2020 season.

Some analysts expected that number to be a high-water mark, partly because of the initial chaos caused by COVID-19 and the one-time transfer rules implemented for some sports.

However, the number ballooned even higher for 2021, hitting 9,567.

College Football Transfer Portal Is Alive and Well in 2022

Recent reporting from the Wall Street Journal gives us some indication regarding the scale of the transfer economy. WSJ reporting from July 22 notes current NCAA data has 2,242 players in the portal since August 1, 2021, from just FBS college football alone.

Now, when you consider the rest of Division 1 football, then all other Division 1 sports, then the other two entire divisions of NCAA athletics…

How Many Players Have Entered the Transfer Portal in 2022?

When the 2022 transfer portal season ends on July 31, 2022, the NCAA will release data on the volume of transfers from the past year.

Technically, this “2022” data will include transfers from the final five months of the 2021 calendar year. However, the NCAA data is clear that a large majority of transfers are clumped at the end of individual sports seasons.

For most, that’s between January and June.

Based on the number of FBS college football players entering the portal from the last 359 days, we should expect the 2022 total to be another astronomical number.
