Itโ€™s the age of the Deion Sanders contract. That means celebrity player coaches are en vogue in college football.

Enter Michael Vick, who is following closely on the trail recently blazed by Sanders.

The soon-to-be-45-year-old, who earned legendary status as the quarterback at Virginia Tech before breaking ankles in the NFL, is a product of Virginiaโ€™s Tidewater region, famous for its fertile football recruiting grounds. Every power program from Penn State to Georgia knows to swing through eastern Virginia to find high-ceiling recruits like Vick.

Now, Vick is taking up residence as a coach. The program: Norfolk State.ย

Like Sanders, he has limited experience as an assistant, but he has parlayed his singular talent as a player into a head coaching job at an HBCU.ย

Like Jackson State a few years ago, Norfolk State appears well-positioned to capitalize on a groundswell of publicity, both local and national, if Vick can make the Spartans competitive on the HBCU circuit. That includes MEAC play and a potential berth in the Celebration Bowl.

Michael Vick Contract

Michael Vick signed a four-year contract as a first-time head coach at Norfolk State.ย

His salary is in line with what many FCS head coaches make, but on the upper end of the scale for HBCUs. Additionally, his contract also includes several bonus incentives for team performance.

Vick will be eligible for a one-year extension if the Spartans finish in the top half of the MEAC at any point during his first three years.

Michael Vick Salary

Michael Vick will make $400,000 per year as the head coach of Norfolk State football.ย

Michael Vick Bonuses

Michael Vick can add to his salary with several performance bonuses that are explicitly enumerated in his contract. That includes a $100,000 bonus in the extremely unlikely event Norfolk State wins the FCS National Championship.

More realistic performance bonuses include:

  • $25,000 for a Celebration Bowl win
  • $15,000 for each NCAA FCS playoff win
  • $10,000 for a MEAC regular-season championship
  • $5,000 for a team APR above 985
  • $5,000 if he is awarded NCAA Coach of the Yearย
  • $2,5000 if he is awarded MEAC Coach of the Year
  • $2,500 if he is awarded AFCA Coach of the Year

Michael Vick Career Earnings

Michael Vick played in the NFL from 2001-15. He made about $116 million from his 15 years of NFL contracts.
