Building a successful modern NFL is centered around a simple philosophy:Â
Draft your quarterback. Protect him. Then, get guys who can wreck the other team’s quarterback.
There might not be a better 2026 NFL prospect that fulfills the third tenet of that philosophy than Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr.Â
Rueben Bain Jr. In the NFL Draft
Bain has flourished in his third year with Miami, setting career highs for tackles (46) and sacks (8.5) on the eve of the national championship game. His ability to beat protection and pressure quarterbacks will be highly prized in the NFL.Â
Bain will be contrasted against Texas Tech’s David Bailey throughout the 2026 draft cycle. While both are classified as edges, there are some current differences in how they’re used that come down to scheme.
Bailey is an OLB in Texas Tech’s base 3-4 defense. Miami plays a 4-3 base, and so Bain is tagged as more of a defensive end.Â
Either way, both guys are rushing the passer, which means they’re both edges and will be compared against one another.Â
In 2025, PFF gave a slight edge to Bailey in its grading, but Bain has played way more snaps.Â

Rueben Bain NFL Draft Projection
I am projecting Rueben Bain Jr. will be drafted in the first nine picks.Â
Rueben Bain Mock Draft
Who badly needs an edge player and is drafting in the top third of the first round? That’d be the Raiders, Titans, Commanders, and Chiefs.Â
Prognosticators looking to forecast the draft could probably rule out the Raiders from drafting Bain. Las Vegas has the No. 1 pick in 2026 and probably needs to exit the first round with a quarterback for the future.Â
That means the Titans (No. 4), Commanders (No. 7), or Chiefs (No. 9) will likely draft Bain. He’s probably too talented to fall past Kansas City.
It’s just a matter of which team feels the Miami defensive end fits their scheme best. A team with a beefier defensive line may prefer Bain’s tape, while a team that plays more 3-4 may like Rodriguez or even Ohio State’s Arvell Reese.Â
