- All that is left in the Sun Belt is the conference championship.
- The conference has four new members for 2022.
The Sun Belt Conference welcomed four new members in 2022: James Madison, Marshall Old Dominion Monarchs, and Southern Miss. Although the teams have low NCAAF playoff odds, with fierce competition at the top of the league, this figures to be one of the most interesting conferences in the country, with so many storylines to follow.
Sun Belt Conference Football: Schedule & Odds for Week 14
Coastal Carolina at Troy (-10.5) – 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
Troy is a 10.5-point favorite in one of the widest spreads you will see in a championship football game. The Trojans are the third-biggest favorite of championship weekend behind only the Georgia Bulldogs, who are -17.5 in the SEC Championship, and the Michigan Wolverines, who are -16.5 in the Big Ten Championship.
What makes Troy deserving of such a large spread?
Jon Sumrall’s first year as head coach has been a resounding success no matter how you slice it, but finishing with a Sun Belt Championship would undoubtedly be a cherry on top of a tremendous 10-win regular season. The Trojans feature one of the best defenses in the nation, surrendering just 16.8 points per game to rank eighth nationally.
Linebacker Carlton Martial, college football’s all-time leading tackler, is the star of the show. After an opening loss to the Ole Miss Rebels, the Trojans lost just one more time, and that came via Hail Mary in Week 3 against Appalachian State.
Coastal Carolina fans will be praying for star quarterback Grayson McCall to return to action this week. Head coach Jamey Chadwell did not offer a definitive update on the two-time Sun Belt Player of the Year, leaving the signal caller’s status unclear for this matchup.
McCall is arguably as essential to his team’s success as any single player in the country. He’s the best player in the Sun Belt and is a big reason why the team has gone 31-5 across the last three seasons. This year, he’s completing 68.9% of his passes for 21 touchdowns and one interception while averaging a robust 9.5 yards per completion. The Chants were embarrassed 47-7 by the James Madison Dukes a week ago, as the offense managed just 183 yards on 2.8 yards per play in McCall’s absence.
