Leftwich is new to the Texas Tech coordinator role this year. Heโ€™s replacing Zach Kittley, who left to become the head coach at Florida Atlantic. Heโ€™s now the youngest head coach in college football.

Leftwich is a similarly young up-and-comer. His first positional coaching job at the Division I level was as Cam Wardโ€™s quarterbacks coach at Incarnate Word.

Ward left for Washington State in 2022; Leftwich stayed and was promoted to OC. After a year, he moved up to work as the offensive coordinator on GJ Kinneโ€™s new Texas State staff โ€“ a team full of hot coaching names.ย

Historically, Texas Tech is a hot spot for big offense and rising stars. Before Kittley arrived in 2022, the post was manned by Sonny Cumbie, who came to Tech after several years as the OC (or co-OC) at nearby TCU. After Matt Wells was fired eight games into the season, Cumbie took over as interim coach and left to become the head coach at Louisiana Tech at the end of the season.

Other recent offensive coordinators at Texas Tech include David Yost (2019-20), Kevin Johns (2018), Eric Morris (2013-17), Neal Brown (2010-12), and Dana Holgorsen (2005-07). Mike Leach worked as both head coach and offensive coordinator in his final years in Lubbock (2008-09).
