Week 7 in the National Football League is here, and it is time to look for breakout stars and favorable NFL betting odds. One player poised to breakout this week is Jonathan Taylor, the running back for the Indianapolis Colts.
Taylor has an opportunity to excel against the 49ers, who are in a rough patch and vulnerable to allowing a big offensive day.
Read on to learn about Colts Head Coach Frank Reich’s game plan for Week 7. Then, explore whether the Colts’ running game can take advantage of the 49ers’ defense.
Colts at 49ers Preview
When looking at NFL betting lines, many experts give an edge to the home team. However, the 49ers are currently winless at home heading into Week 7. They’re only 4-point favorites, which shows that oddsmakers have paid attention to their recent struggles.
In Week 3, they allowed 30 points at home against the Green Bay Packers. The following week was a similar story, giving up 28 points at home against the Seattle Seahawks. The home-field advantage is not translating out in San Francisco.
Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts put up two consecutive positive performances on the road. In Week 4, they defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-17. The following week, they lost a heartbreaker in overtime to the Ravens in Baltimore.
Indianapolis Colts Offensive Analysis
To see if Jonathan Taylor can have a big day in Week 7, we need to analyze the entire Colts offense. If the 49ers do not fear Carson Wentz and the Colts’ passing game, they will stack the box and shut down the running game.
Through five games, the Colts have the 14th ranked passing game in the NFL. In Week 5, Carson Wentz had a breakthrough game on the road against the Ravens. He exceeded 400 passing yards for the first time this season.
Taylor was a primary reason for the Colts’ success. He had 53 yards on the ground with a rushing touchdown.
He added 116 receiving yards on three catches. The game’s highlight was a 76-yard receiving touchdown from Wentz to Taylor. He was the leading receiver for the Colts on the day.
For the season, Taylor has 327 rushing yards with two touchdowns. He is averaging a robust 4.5 yards per carry. Taylor is projected to exceed 1000 yards on the ground this season.
He has added nearly 200 yards receiving on 14 catches. With the receiving yards added, Taylor is averaging over 100 all-purpose yards per game.
The 49ers are 16th in the league against the run. However, they boast a top-ten passing defense and have a formidable pass rush led by Nick Bosa. Based on these statistics and trends, Taylor is certainly capable of having another big day.
Jonathan Taylor Is Ready to Breakout
Taylor is one of the league’s best dual-threats out of the backfield. He can burn defenses in between the tackles and catch passes out in the flat. Unfortunately, thus far this season, the 49ers are an average team and prone to giving up a lot of points.
