Detroit Lions: Odds Breakdown for the Money Line and Point Spread

NFL Week 7

The Detroit Lions are 15.5-point underdogs and +650 money line underdogs in Week 7, according to the NFL betting lines from BetMGM. The over/under point total is 50. Detroit has lost by at least 15 points twice this year, once to the Packers at Lambeau Field and once to the Bengals last week in Detroit.

The Week 7 game against the Rams is ripe with storylines. First, Jared Goff returns to Los Angeles to face the team that drafted him first overall in 2016. Second, Mathew Stafford is playing against the team he led for 12 years. Lastly, Dan Campbell is continuing to search for his first win as the Lions head coach.

Although a win for the Detroit Lions seems unlikely, it’s worth looking into the matchup to see if they can cover this large spread. Read on to find out more about the Lions at Rams matchup in Week 7.

Jared Goff Needs to Connect on Deep Passes in Week 7

Lions vs. Rams is a matchup of two teams going in opposite directions. Lions quarterback Jared Goff has thrown just seven touchdowns this season, putting him at 20th in the NFL among quarterbacks.

Detroit needs more out of Goff for the Lions to cover this spread, and Head Coach Dan Campbell has said as much. Campbell called out Goff after the game last week, saying, “I feel like he needs to step up more than he has.”

Goff’s struggles have a lot to do with failing to complete deep passes. Goff has the seventh-most deep pass attempts in the NFL, but he’s only connected on six of those. Goff will need to hit on some deep passes for the Lions to cover the spread or contribute to the 50-point total in this game.

Los Angeles Should Have No Problem Scoring

The Lions’ defense is allowing 28.7 points per game this season. That’s the 25th worst mark in the NFL, and Detroit hasn’t played an offense as good as the Rams.

The Rams are averaging over 29 points per game in 2021. This matchup looks like an unstoppable force in the Rams’ offense, meeting a moveable object in the Lions’ defense.

Detroit will certainly be motivated to find its first win of the season against its old quarterback, Stafford, but that probably won’t be enough to secure a victory.

Breaking Down the Point Spread for the Detroit Lions in Week 7

I expect the Rams to score close to 40 points in this game, which means the Detroit Lions would have to score three touchdowns and add a couple of field goals to cover the 15.5-point spread.

It’s hard to see that happening. Instead, it seems more likely that Detroit scores once or twice, the Rams cover the spread, and the point total goes over 50.
