The Detroit Lions can’t catch a break. In a scenario that Lions fans and sports betting enthusiasts are all too familiar with this year, Detroit lost another soul-crushing game as time expired last Sunday.
People weren’t expecting much out of the Lions this year, so starting the season 0-5 isn’t that big of a shocker. What is shocking, though, is how those losses have come about. In Week 1, the Lions almost pulled off a miraculous comeback against a tough 49ers squad but just fell short.
In Week 3, they fell victim to a record-breaking 66-yard FG with no time left on the clock. And last week, with the game looking to be all but wrapped up, the Vikings got down the field in 37 seconds for a 54-yard dagger of a field goal to dash Detroit’s dreams. So is Week 6 the week that the Lions finally get in the win column?
Detroit Lions Against the Spread This Year
With all the close games the Lions have lost this year, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they are 3-2 against the spread. This week has the Lions’ spread at a +3 underdog, and I like their strong spread play to continue. Cincinnati isn’t a team that usually blows teams out, so I think this game will be close.
The two Joes (Burrow and Mixon) are both a little banged up, and Cincinnati is coming off an overtime home loss to the Green Bay Packers. Of course, there’s always a chance that rookie sensation Ja’Marr Chase and the Bengals light up the scoreboard, but the way Detroit has managed to hang in there against tough teams, I don’t see this game being a one-sided affair.
NFL Week 6 Lines
This week might be the one that you should consider taking the Lions on the money line. The odds are currently at +140, which might be enticing for some. It’s not a bet that’s for the faint of heart, and I don’t make a habit of betting on 0-5 teams, but this one feels like it has a chance. Here are some of the other notable bets I think are worth a play this week:
- -110 Lions +3
- -115 Both teams to score 20+ points
- +350 Lions to win by a margin of 1-6
- -110 Under 48.5
- +170 Lions and over 30.5
I see this as a close game and don’t expect a touchdown parade like the one we saw with the Chargers and Browns last week. These two teams have hit the under more often than the over, and at a lofty 48.5, I’m taking my chances it goes low.
A Look Ahead
After this week, the Lions head to Los Angeles to take on Jared Goff’s former Rams team. And while revenge might be on his mind, I don’t see the results going in his favor. After the Rams, the Lions will host the Eagles before heading to Pittsburgh and Cleveland for a two-game road trip.
If the Lions want to get their first win in the next month, their best chance is this week at home against the Bengals.
Time Is on the Lions’ Side
The season is still young, and there’s lots of time for the Detroit Lions to get that highly coveted first win. The good news is that they are playing competitive football and have exceeded the expectations of many NFL pundits. While they might not have anything to show for it yet, the Lions are a team with a lot of promise.
