The Detroit Lions and the Cincinnati Bengals are coming into Week 6 with a few things in common. Both are having disappointing seasons, and both suffered heart-wrenching, down to the wire losses in Week 5.

The Lions and the Bengals have severe growing pains to overcome, but they have shown some promise despite their less than successful seasons and record. The Bengals might fare better in this comparison, thanks to their star quarterback Joe Burrow. So, what are the NFL betting picks saying about this Week 6 matchup?

What are the Detroit Lions’ odds that they can pull off a win this week? Can the Lions’ defense slow down Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase? Read on to learn what to expect from this Week 6 match-up.

Can The Lions Overcome the Growing Pains and Grab a Win From the Bengals?

Sure, the Lions have an 0-5 record coming into Week 6, but under the new leadership of Head Coach Dan Campbell, the Lions are starting to show some grit.

While their record may not reflect it, many have been surprised by the toughness they’ve demonstrated on the field. Yes, they are still suffering some growing pains and need to improve their roster, but after Campbell’s emotional post-game loss in Week 5, Lions fans continue to hope things will get better.

Undoubtedly, the Lions will need to address some offensive problems. Jared Goff wrapped up Week 5 with only 224 passing yards, a 57% completion percentage, and no touchdown tosses on 44 passes. The truth is that he has limited options at wide receiver.

His best options so far have been second-year RB D’Andre Swift and third-year TE T.J. Hockenson.

The Lions’ offense will need to perform better if they want to stay competitive against the Bengals’ more productive offensive lineup.

Another area of concern for the Lions is how the defense will find the strength and consistency to handle Burrow. The defense will have to keep pressure on Burrow to stop him from connecting on long pass plays with Ja’Marr Chase.

Linebackers Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Alex Anzalone will have to keep Burrow in the pocket and watch for routes in the middle of the field, while Charles Harris and Michael Brockers need to get to keep pressure on the quarterback. Will Harris will also have to ensure he keeps receivers in front of him so that Detroit doesn’t give up big plays on defense.

Will the Bengals Underestimate the Lions?

Like the Lions, the Bengals made the end of Week 5 both exciting and disappointing. They managed to rally against the Packers and score a late touchdown and two-point conversion to tie up the game. That’s when things got messy for both the Bengals and Packers.

The Bengals had a chance to stun Packer nation with PK Evan McPherson’s 57-yard field goal attempt with only 26 seconds left on the clock. However, he missed that kick and another in OT that would have snatched the victory. The Packers also struggled with kicking, missing three attempts for a win before finishing the Bengals off in OT.

The Bengals also had a scare when Burrow went to an area hospital following the game as he struggled to talk from a throat contusion. He was released Sunday night, and the official line from the Bengals camp is that he’s ready for the Lions in Week 6.

This should have the Lions’ defense worried. Burrow went 22-of-27 for 232 yards, two touchdowns, and no turnovers in Week 5 while producing two big-time throws.

Ja’Marr Chase had a big game and was responsible for four of the Bengals big pass plays of 15-plus yards. RB Joe Mixon is also an option. When healthy, he can break big runs if the defense doesn’t play the gaps correctly.

Can the Lions Get a Win in Week 6?

The Lions will need consistency and discipline on defense to beat the Bengals. This game will probably be a close contest and could come down to clock management, which means whoever can run the ball more effectively should win.
