Philadelphia had a golden opportunity to make up ground on the Cowboys in the NFC East on Sunday with a win against the last-place Giants. But after putting up a 40-point win against the Saints just a week ago, the Eagles had a disappointing 13-7 loss that saw quarterback Jalen Hurts complete just 14 passes on the day to go with three interceptions. After winning three of their previous four matches, this game squashed their momentum.
Week 13’s Eagles at Jets matchup presents an opportunity for Philly to rebound against one of the worst defenses in the league (32nd in total yards and points against). The NFL odds have the Eagles as an early -6.5 favorite on the road, so let’s see what we can expect from this inter-conference tilt.
The Jury Is Still Out on Jalen
I still don’t think the Eagles know what they have in quarterback Jalen Hurts. While it’s important to remember that this is Hurts’ first full season as a starter (he started just four games last year), the Eagles are going to need him to push the ball down the field a little more.
So far, he’s been very efficient with his legs, but as we’ve seen with so many quarterbacks before, that will only get you so far in the NFL. Hurts hasn’t passed for more than 178 yards in five straight games and has thrown just three TDs to go with four picks in that time.
Zach Wilson Has To Get Going
Zach Wilson, the second-overall pick in the draft, hasn’t played well this season. He has four touchdowns and ten interceptions in the seven games that he’s played this season (including the game against New England when he left with a knee injury in the 2nd quarter). I’m not ready to brand him with the bust-card yet, but Wilson needs to start showing some flashes – and fast.
Wilson has averaged just 187.6 passing yards per game and has one of the lowest QB ratings in the NFL. The time is nigh for Wilson to show why he was a number two draft pick and remind us of the magic he produced at BYU.
Eagles at Jets: Best Bets
The Jets are coming off a 21-14 win against the Texans last week. While Wilson was largely ineffective (145 passing yards, INT), he managed to scamper for a third-quarter touchdown, and the Jets ran the ball effectively.
Jalen Hurts and the Eagles are coming off of one of their worst performances of the season and will need to quickly put it behind them if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Eagles are 6-6 against the spread this year, and while I’d usually be on board with the -6.5 spread, Hurts is banged up with an ankle injury that could have a significant impact on his rushing. He’s currently questionable to start the game, but Nick Sirianni is hopeful he’ll play.
But even if Gardner Minshew gets the nod, I still believe the Eagles will cover. They have a defense that ranks eleventh in yards allowed per game and should be able to shut down the anemic offense of the Jets, which only scores 18.1 points per game. In addition, Minshew is no rookie and should be able to put some points on the board against the porous Jets defense that ranks 29th in passing yards allowed per game.
Who Will Fly Higher on Sunday?
While the Eagles at Jets doesn’t scream must-watch television, it’s still a critical game for the Eagles. After this week, Philly will have bye week before finishing the season with four straight divisional matchups.
