  • Germany is last in Group E, while Costa Rica is third.
  • Germany needs a win, while Costa Rica could advance with a draw.
  • I see Germany finally turning it on and taking all three points.

Germany will face Costa Rica in the penultimate match of their FIFA World Cup Group Stage.

Hansi Flick’s team has one point and is in the bottom spot in Group E, while Costa Rica is in third with three points. Nothing but a win will do for the Germans here, while Costa Rica can advance with a point if Spain beats Japan in the other Group E game.

Will Germany be eliminated in the Group Stage for the second time in a row? Or will Die Mannschaft get it together against a cautious Costa Rica?

Germany vs. Costa Rica Analysis

Germany comes into the final game of the Group Stage needing a win to advance. They were shockingly beaten by Japan in their opening game and could only manage a draw against Spain.

This means that the Germans are facing elimination in the Group Stage for the second World Cup in a row. Hansi Flick’s team must win this game convincingly and rely on Spain to beat Japan.

Things have obviously not gone according to plan for Germany, but the silver lining is they have had 13 shots on goal over two games. Costa Rica conceded seven goals to Spain, so this bodes well for the Germans to finally find their goalscoring form.

I think Niclas Fullkrug and Leroy Sané should start this match, as they completely changed the game when they came off the bench against Spain.

Costa Rica’s start to the tournament was their 7-0 humiliation at the hands of La Roja, but they managed to bounce back with a carefully managed 1-0 win against Japan.

Mentally, Costa Rica did well to recover from their joint-record loss in their opening game, but they were far from convincing against Japan. Keylor Navas is the best player on this team, but a goalkeeper can only do so much, as was evident against Spain.

My biggest concern is that Costa Rica has managed a measly four shots in two games, with only one of those on target. So, even if they were to find space against Germany, they aren’t exactly guaranteed to get on the scoresheet.

Costa Rica can get through with a point if Spain beats Japan as expected, but I still think they will try to go for a win. This will open up plenty of space for Germany’s superior midfield.

The Germans have made it hard for themselves thus far, but I expect them to take this game convincingly to advance.
