UConn is one of the top teams in this year’s March Madness odds bracket, at least according to BetMGM online sportsbook.Â
This will come as little surprise to seasoned college basketball fans. UConn has grown into the most successful basketball program of the modern age, having claimed six national championships since 1999.Â
That’s twice as many as the next-best programs over that same span: Duke, North Carolina, and Florida.
UConn’s most recent titles came under current head coach Dan Hurley in 2023 and 2024. The Huskies were the first team in more than 15 years to win consecutive college basketball national championships. In the history of Div. I men’s college basketball, only eight programs have ever gone back-to-back.
That raises a key historical question that will be referenced throughout the 2026 college basketball postseason.Â
Has a College Basketball Team Ever Won Three National Championships In Four Years?
Yes. Two of the eight programs that won consecutive titles ultimately won at least three championships over a four-year span.
The most famous is John Wooden’s UCLA dynasty, which won nine national championships in 10 seasons from 1964-73.Â
The Bruins won three titles in the four years from 1964-67, with Texas Western (now UTEP) winning an interim championship at the end of the 1966 NCAA Tournament. UCLA then won its third under Wooden in 1967, then added six more titles in consecutive years through 1973.Â
The lesser-known team to win three titles in four years was Adolph Rupp’s Kentucky program at the end of the 1940s. The Wildcats went back-to-back in 1948 and ‘49, then won it again in 1951 after City College of New York scored a championship victory in 1950.Â
UConn could be the third men’s team to accomplish this rare feat with six wins in March, as well as the first in more than 50 years.Â
Because of this, BetMGM players can probably expect UConn basketball odds to remain a popular target in March.
