Has USA Ever Been Eliminated in Pool Play of the WBC?

The United States baseball team has never been eliminated in pool play of the World Baseball Classic. The USA has reached at least the quarterfinal round in all five WBC tournaments thus far.

That streak could be in jeopardy tonight. After losing to Italy in its final game of pool play, the USA will be watching the Italy vs. Mexico matchup with intensity to determine who will qualify for the WBC quarterfinal round.

USA’s Tiebreaker Scenarios for 2026 WBC

With one Pool B game remaining between Italy (3-0) and Mexico (2-1), here are the tiebreaker scenarios for tonight’s matchup

Scenario No. 1: Italy wins

  • Italy advances at 4-0
  • USA advances at 3-1

Scenario No. 2: Mexico wins and scores five or more runs

  • Mexico advances at 3-1
  • USA advances at 3-1

Scenario No. 3: Mexico wins, but scores four or fewer runs

  • Mexico advances at 3-1
  • Italy advances at 3-1
