  • The 2026 Houston Open transitions the men’s tour to clay season.
  • The total prize purse for the 2026 Houston Open is roughly $700,000.

With a few notable exceptions, professional tennis players mostly compete on hardcourt in the opening months of a new calendar year. The Aussie summer gives way to February and March tournaments across Europe, the Middle East, and North America that are all played on the traditional hard surface.

But in the world of tennis, the beginning of spring means one thing: clay season.

Clay tennis, which is essentially played on a dirt surface, is a slower style of tennis that emphasizes volleying and technical skill. There are more long rallies, which some fans find more “watchable.”

Clay season is mostly played in Europe. But with most of the top tour players having spent the last month in the United States for Indian Wells and the Miami Open, there are one or two brief clay tennis options this week before the tour fully moves back to the Mediterranean footprint.

The Houston Open, also known as the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship, is the only tour-level U.S. men’s tournament currently contested on clay. That gives it a certain speciality in the world of the ATP schedule.

There are other ATP tournaments this week in Europe and North Africa. They’re all ATP 250 events, so they should have roughly similar prize purses – in this case, $700,045. But for those who are in the Americas and looking to stay for another week, the Houston Open provides just that opportunity.
