Head coach Brian Kelly has named his starter for Saturday’s big rivalry matchup with USC. Jack Coan will start for Notre Dame.
Since Week 1, the Irish have used a quarterback-by-committee approach. Now Kelly, along with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, are ready to put their faith in Coan and name him as starting QB. So, what do college football odds say about the University of Notre Dame and their QB shuffle?
Can Coan prove he can get the job done during a big rivalry week? Has Notre Dame made enough changes in their offensive lineup to give Coan the support he needs?
Read on to learn more about Jack Coan and the two guys ready to hit the field in his place as they prepare for USC on Saturday.
Notre Dame Quarterback Jack Coan
Jack Coan took a considerable risk when transferring for his final year of eligibility from Wisconsin to Notre Dame. His 2020 injury meant he lost his starting spot at Wisconsin, but could he do enough to get playing time at ND with only one season to play?
He certainly came to the Irish with impressive stats, throwing for 23 touchdowns and 3,278 yards as a Badger.
In Week 6 against the Virginia Tech Hokies, Coan had a shaky start and was replaced by true freshman Tyler Buchner. Buchner threw two interceptions, and Coan came back into the game, where he led the Irish on two strong drives late in the game for the Irish to hold on for a 32-29 win.
At Notre Dame, Coan has completed 61.7% of his passes with ten touchdowns and three interceptions through six games.
Kelly and Rees’ have also made some changes during their Week 7 bye week to the offensive line that they believe will help Coan going forward. Junior Andrew Kristofic will start at left guard, and freshman Joe Alt will start at left tackle. They hope these changes strengthen the O-line and give Coan more time in the pocket as they prepare for USC.
Coan shouldn’t assume that he has completely secured the job. As has been the pattern throughout the season, Buchner will likely rotate in and play. He’s played in four games, with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Sophomore Drew Pyne, who’s played in four games with two touchdowns and three interceptions, is ready to go too.
The Quarterback Factor in Week 8 for USC
USC arrives in South Bend with their own QB questions. First, there’s no word on whether freshman QB Jaxson Dart will be cleared to play after a meniscus injury.
QB Kedon Slovis threw for 400 yards in the Trojans’ loss to the Utah Utes in Week 6, so the Trojans can move the ball through the air. The question is whether Slovis can play consistently enough to keep USC from getting too far behind against Notre Dame.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans QB Questions
Make no mistake, Jack Coan, along with Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne, are ready to keep 13th ranked Notre Dame’s momentum rolling. Whichever guy is needed to get the job done will be on the field. But, so far, the odds are on Coan to do what needs to be done.
