It was another week and another heartbreaking loss for the hard-luck Lions this past Sunday. So much so that it left Head Coach Dan Campbell in tears in the postgame press conference.
After Jared Goff led his team down the field for a score with 37 seconds left in the game, the Lions opted to go for the win rather than the tie and completed a two-point conversion. If you had a football bet on Detroit, you were no doubt delighted.
But while the Lions were celebrating their victory, Minnesota had other plans and quickly drove down the field to set up a game-winning 54-yard field goal as time expired. It was a devastating loss for a team that has already suffered a few of them this year. With Week 5 in the books, can Goff and the Lions rebound in Week 6?
Jared Goff Stats
After taking Los Angeles to the Super Bowl in just his second complete season as a starting quarterback, the future looked bright for Jared Goff. But after a couple of mediocre seasons following the Super Bowl loss, the Rams brass grew impatient with their pivot and decided to ship him to Detroit (along with a king’s ransom of picks) in exchange for long-time Lion Matthew Stafford.
It’s not that Goff’s numbers were terrible. He holds a career 64% completion rate with 114 TDs to 58 picks. And other than his rookie year when he went 0-7, Goff has never had a losing season. But, of course, there’s a good chance that will change this year with the Lions in rebuilding mode and starting 0-5.
Goff has put up serviceable numbers while keeping turnovers at a respectable level. So far this season, he’s thrown for seven touchdowns to go with three interceptions and has averaged 261 yards passing per game, which is on par with his career.
Lions’ Odds in Week 6
It will be interesting to see how Goff and the Lions respond in Week 6 after such a crushing defeat. I’m sure Lions fans thought they had reached the pinnacle of disappointment when they were sunk by a last-second 66-yard FG just a couple of weeks ago, but last week might have just one-upped it.
The Lions now head home to take on the Bengals, who just suffered a tough loss of their own. The line currently has the Lions as a three-point underdog, which I believe is a good bet. You would have to think that the football gods will eventually have to show a little love to a team that has been through so much this season.
The Lions are 3-2 against the spread this year, while the Bengals are 2-3. If a couple of Goff passes can find the end zone, I believe the Lions have a real shot at covering this game, if not winning outright.
Will the Lions Finally Roar?
Detroit seems to be a tight-knit group that has bought into what Dan Campbell is selling. The team has played tough in every game this season, and it’s looking like it’s only a matter of time before they get rewarded for their efforts.
Jared Goff hasn’t been flashy, but he also hasn’t been a disaster the way the media often makes him out to be. So I think that Week 6 might be the week where the stars align and the Lions finally get their first win of the season.
