In consecutive weeks, Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers went on the road and beat two of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL: the Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys.
This week, the Niners travel to hallowed Lambeau Field to tangle with another offensive juggernaut: the Green Bay Packers. San Francisco is an underdog according to current NFL odds.
Can Jimmy G. lead the 49ers to victory for a third week in a row? Let’s find out.
49ers at Packers (-5.5)
Before we get into the details, here are the facts to know about this game.
- Date: Jan. 22, 2022
- Time: 8:15 P.M. EST
- Venue: Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI
Dynamic Weapons
The San Francisco 49ers have one of the most dynamic and versatile offense weapons in the league in WR Deebo Samuel.
This season Samuel caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards. Samuel had the 24th most receptions in the league. However, his 1,405 receiving yards put him at fifth. Samuel averaged a whopping 18.2 yards per reception.
He’s more than a dynamic pass catcher, though; he can also run the ball. Samuel serves as a hybrid running back, and this season he rushed the ball 59 times for 365 yards. He also scored eight rushing TDs.
Yet, Samuel isn’t the team’s only weapon.
RB Eli Mitchell rushed for 963 yards this season and gained 96 in last week’s Wild Card game. Garoppolo has all the playmakers he needs with a healthy Mitchell and Samuel.
Game Manager Jimmy G.
It’s important to note that current weather predictions say this game may be one of the coldest playoff games in NFL history. A player’s grip strength can be cut in half in as little as 15 minutes of exposure to freezing weather, making it harder to throw a football. There’s also a five percent drop in combined yardage on average when the temperature for a game is below 50 degrees. As the temperature drops, the impact on combined yardage increases.
When the 49ers win games, Jimmy G. averages around 27.11 passing attempts. He also averages 251.11 yards in those wins, along with 11 TDs and only three interceptions.
Garoppolo threw 20 interceptions during the regular season, and he must play a clean game to give his team a chance to win. If the temperatures are as low as expected in this game, the 49ers may need to lean on their rushing attack and limit the times that Garoppolo throws the ball.
Don’t Fall Behind
The 49ers came back from a 17-point deficit against the Rams in Week 17 to make the playoffs. They don’t come back often, only winning three games this season after falling behind in the first half.
Aaron Rodgers and the Packers averaged 13.1 points in the first half and 18 in their last three. The Packers love to start hot, and San Francisco’s 10th-ranked defense will get challenged early.
When these teams played in Week 3, the Packers led at the half 17-7 with Rodgers throwing for 184 yards on 16 completions.
I believe that Garoppolo and the Niners must use their running attack against a Packers team that allows 111.8 rushing yards per game and keep the ball away from a potent Packers offense.
Can Jimmy Garoppolo Get it Done?
To win this game, Jimmy Garoppolo must avoid mistakes and get the ball to Mitchell and Samuel.
With a stout defense and a dynamic rushing attack, I believe Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers can get it done if he avoids turnovers and plays an efficient game.
