Michigan State is off to an impressive, and some might say surprising, 5-0 start on the season. So how have they hit their stride and put the points on the board to remain undefeated? While there are plenty of reasons for the Spartans’ success, it seems that Kenneth Walker III is making his mark with the offense.
Will he continue to rack up yards as the Spartans travel to Rutgers this Saturday? Will college football betting fans see the impressive stats from Walker and favor the Michigan State Spartans again this week?
Coach Mel Tucker, the Spartan offensive line, and Walker would all say that’s the plan. Walker’s rushing prowess has to scare the Scarlet Knights, who have to be wondering how they can stop him.
Read on for more on Kenneth Walker III’s impressive stats and how they’re likely to help the Spartans in Week 6.
Walker a Spark for Michigan States’ Offense
Walker is new to the Spartan offense and has Spartan nation cheering his transfer from Wake Forest. It didn’t take long for Mel Tucker and the rest of the offense to recognize his magic.
He has a unique ability to cut, break tackles, and pick up extra yards whenever the ball gets in his hands. His innate sense of which direction to go is evident as he leads the nation in rushing yards.
Those 680 rushing yards are supported by a Spartan offense that seems to be firing on all cylinders. The offensive line has done an excellent job of opening up running lanes for Walker, and his patience in the backfield allows him to see where the defense is attacking before he makes his move.
Walker’s Impressive Numbers
Each week of the season has shown Walker building momentum.
The running back started with a monster debut of 264 yards and four touchdowns in the season opener at Northwestern. Since then, he has topped 100 rushing yards rushing in three of his five games with the Spartans and leads the nation at 136.0 yards per game on the ground.
Last week against Western Kentucky, Walker had 24 carries for 126 yards and three touchdowns.
Heisman Trophy Talk
Is it a curse when those in the football world start using your name in the same sentence as the Heisman Trophy? Historically, many players have had their names batted around as potential contenders, only to be disappointed or fall below the mark.
Walker has big dreams, and he hopes early consideration of him as a contender doesn’t turn out to be a curse. Back in March, when his name started to be mentioned with some other greats this season, he saw it as motivation.
Young stars might aspire and dream, but Walker is now using talk of him being a Heisman contender to motivate him every week.
This week, what will he do against the struggling Rutgers defense, who’s giving up 131.8 rushing yards per game? The Scarlet Knights are eleventh in rush defense in the Big Ten and should have their hands full with Walker.
Walker Is Set for a Big Game Against Rutgers
There are few who doubt that Walker won’t have a big week against Rutgers in Week 6. Can the Michigan State offense help Walker improve his Heisman chances and take the Spartans to 6-0 on the season? Spartan Nation hopes it’ll be a big day for the team at SHI Stadium this Saturday.
