Coming into Week 5, the Lions were 0-4 and desperate for a win. Unfortunately, when the NFL world thought they would pull off a victory against the Lions, Detroit gave up a one-point lead in 37 seconds.
Detroit fans feel frustrated after years of losing, but they shouldn’t despair just yet. There’s a sense around the league that the Lions could become a solid team again with some patience. The Lions’ NFL odds may not look good this season, but they’re not statistically out of the playoff race yet, and they appear to be building a never-say-die culture that will serve them well in the next few years.
They are sitting at 0-5 in the NFC North. There’s still time for Goff and the Lions to rebound and make the playoffs (as unlikely as that may be).
The Lions 2021 Season
Jared Goff looked great in Week 1, almost leading the Lions to a comeback victory late in the 4th quarter. But since then, it’s been anything but dynamic in Detroit. Other teams in their division appear to be on the rise while the Lions continue to stay flat.
Matt Nagy and the Bears are starting to see some progress with Fields as their quarterback. Chicago is also beginning to see some improvements on defense and have a strong running game they can lean on.
The Vikings? They currently sit at 2-3 after beating the Lions, but they have a solid quarterback and a defense loaded with talent at critical positions.
Meanwhile, the Packers have Aaron Rodgers (for this season at least), are 4-1, and are playing like a team that’s poised to make another deep playoff run.
The good news for Lions fans is that there’s nowhere to go but up from here. The team is currently last in the division. Will they make the playoffs this year? Probably not. With that said, Dan Campbell has a team filled with fighters and has done an excellent job of instilling passion back into a squad that seemed dormant for several years.
The Lions’ NFL Odds
We know that it might take a miracle for the Lions to make it to the postseason, but what are their official odds?
The Lions were a popular bet to make the playoffs before the season began because of the Aaron Rodgers situation in Green Bay and their long odds. Bettors believed they provided the most value in the NFC North, but they quickly learned that oddsmakers were correct in assuming that Detroit was in for a long year.
They are currently sitting at +25000 to win the NFC North, which makes the team with the longest odds to win their division in the NFL. For reference, the 0-5 Jaguars, who may be without a coach soon, are at +8000, and the Jets are at +15000.
It’s not looking good, but here’s the good news. The Lions should have a top-three pick in the NFL draft, have a coach that’s passionate about getting the franchise back on track, and players who never quit. Those three things tend to be predictors for a turnaround season next year.
Watch the Lions Rise Up
The Lions’ NFL odds aren’t good right now. They would need a Rocky-level comeback to even think about the playoffs. If they did get in, it would be the most remarkable NFL comeback story of all time.
For bettors, it’s important to remember that the Lions will fight any team they play until the finish, making their spreads an always exciting bet.
