The last time a full-time pitcher won an MVP award in Major League Baseball was in 2014, when Los Angeles Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw did so.
Technically, Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has won multiple MVP awards as a two-way player this decade. But it’s rare for full-time pitchers to perform well enough to claim an MVP trophy. There have been 21 starting pitchers and four relief pitchers to win an MVP award in MLB history.
Since the Cy Young Award was created in 1956, only 11 pitchers have won both trophies in the same season.
