The implementation of the extra innings ghost runner rule has changed the game and made free baseball much more exciting, including with MLB betting.

However, with the new rules catered to scoring faster, the importance of execution and getting the ghost runner home can swing momentum quickly. Extra innings wins may point to the caliber of a team as the more they can succeed in these clutch situations, the more they will win overall.

So, let’s look at the leaders in extra innings wins and see if late-game heroics translates into long-term success.

Here are the extra innings leaders:

Tampa Bay Rays – (3-0)

The Rays are the current leaders in extra innings victories as they have won all three thus far. When you look at the profile of the Rays, they are a team built for extra innings. They possess the fourth-best bullpen ERA and the third-lowest bullpen BABIP.

Offensively, they are not a team that is built on slugging and strikeouts. Rather, they have multiple guys who can handle the bat quite well and manufacture the ghost run without even getting a hit.

Their extra innings success is a reflection of how good the Rays are, as they are currently 16-10 and sit just 2.5 games out of the division lead.

New York Mets – (2-0)

It should come as no surprise that the team with the best record in baseball is also undefeated in extra innings.

Like the Rays, the Mets are a team with a strong back end of the bullpen and a lineup of quality hitters who do not strike out. For the first time in years, there is an increase in the number of balls put in play and the Mets are the leading team in that category.

Being able to get the ghost runner in without a big hit and being able to strand him on base are the keys to extra innings success and the Mets have proved that they are capable of both.

Baltimore Orioles – (2-0)

While you may expect the team that had the worst record in baseball each of the last two seasons to be bad in every situation, the Orioles have found extra innings success.

The credit is all due to their bullpen. Surprisingly, Baltimore is third in the majors in bullpen ERA. Although their success may be short-lived as they are also third in offensive strikeout rate and are 23rd in team batting average.

Kansas City Royals — (2-1)

The Royals are another sub .500 team with a winning extra innings record. However, unlike those ahead of them, they don’t have any indicators to sustain late-game success.

Kansas City has the third-worst bullpen ERA and they are 27th in team batting average. Their one saving grace is that they also have the second-lowest strikeout rate. As the old saying goes if you put the ball in play, good things will happen and the Royals have had some good fortune on their side.

Team Extra Innings Record
Tampa Bay Rays  3-0
New York Mets 2-0
Baltimore Orioles 2-0
Kansas City Royals 2-1
Minnesota Twins  1-0
Los Angeles Angels 1-0
Seattle Mariners 1-0
Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0
Chicago Cubs 1-0
Colorado Rockies  1-0
