A spot in the ALCS will be up for grabs when the Seattle Mariners host the Detroit Tigers in Game 5 of the ALDS. First pitch is set for 8:08 p.m. ET on Friday at T-Mobile Park on FOX.
It could be an unforgettable night for whichever team wins this showdown. The Mariners haven’t reached the ALCS since 2001, while the Tigers’ last trip came in 2013.
Both teams are giving the ball to a pitcher they trust. Detroit will start left-hander Tarik Skubal (13-6, 2.21 ERA), who will likely win his second straight Cy Young trophy. Right-hander George Kirby (10-8, 4.21 ERA) gets the nod for Seattle.

My favorite Tigers vs. Mariners prediction for Game 5 of the ALDS is Detroit’s moneyline (-125) ahead of Friday’s showdown.
The Mariners won the first matchup against Skubal in Game 2, but I’ll bet against that happening twice in a five-game series.
Even in that contest (Seattle’s first home playoff win since 2001), Skubal pitched well enough to give the Tigers a chance. He went seven innings, striking out nine batters and walking one. He allowed two runs – a pair of solo shots from Jorge Polanco – in a 3-2 loss.
The Mariners have faced Skubal three times this year, including the playoff matchup. They have scored nine runs on 15 hits in 17 2/3 total innings. That’s about as good a showing against Skubal as any team could ask for.
Skubal’s props suggest he will shove on Friday. His earned runs prop is set at 1.5 (+100 to the over), while his hits allowed total is 3.5 (-185 to the over).
I’d be interested in a plus-money price for him to earn a win if that market became available as an alternative way to back the Tigers. I also like the under on Skubal’s strikeouts prop now that it’s climbed to 9.5, as he hasn’t cleared this mark in all three matchups against Seattle.
Detroit will trust its ace in a winner-take-all Game 5.
