High Expectations

This will be the Blue Jays first official Opening Day since 2019, as issues surrounding COVID-19 forced the club to play its home games away from Rogers Centre for the entirety of 2020 and significant portions of the 2021 campaign.

Fielding one of the most exciting and talented rosters in franchise history, coupled with World Series aspirations, the atmosphere should be electric in Toronto come Friday night.

Marcus Semien Returns

The Jays will welcome back former second-baseman Marcus Semien, who, along with shortstop Corey Seager, represent the Rangers’ prized offseason acquisitions.

Semien hit 45 home runs in his lone season in Toronto, an all-time record for a second baseman, ultimately signing a seven-year, $175 million contract with Texas in the offseason. The 31-year-old is projected to hit leadoff in what should be a vastly improved Rangers offense.

Confirmed Starters

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo has tapped Jose Berrios as his team’s Opening Day starter.

This will be Berrios’ first full season in a Toronto uniform since being acquired at last year’s trade deadline. The 27-year-old compiled a 3.58 ERA across 12 starts with the Jays in 2021 and is being billed as the club’s ace.

As for the Rangers, they will turn to free-agent signee Jon Gray. Gray, who spent the past seven seasons with the Colorado Rockies, is coming off a year in which he posted an 8-12 record (29 starts) to go along with a 4.59 ERA and 157 strikeouts over 149 innings pitched.
