This is one of the more difficult win total predictions, but I prefer the over for the Knicks at 52.5. The defending champions might have found something special during their playoff run.
Last postseason, New York went 16-3 with a net rating of +15.4. The team ranked first in offensive rating (119.9) and defensive rating (104.5) en route to its first title since 1973.
The Knicks weren’t nearly as impressive in the regular season. They finished third in the Eastern Conference with a 53-29 record. Their net rating of +6.4 ranked fifth in the league, while posting an offensive rating of 118.7 and a defensive rating of 112.3.
It’s fair to be skeptical of the Knicks’ defensive effort over an 82-game season, but their offense can be elite enough to post the best record in the East. They have the highest preseason over/under in the conference.
One way the Knicks can build a better regular-season resume this season is to avoid a lull like last year. Sometime after their NBA Cup championship, New York went 2-9 during a winter stretch. If not for that, the Knicks might have cleared their preseason win total of 53.5.
The championship hangover effect is not a concern because it’s more of a myth than reality. Each of the past three defending champs has cleared their preseason win total: Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics, and Denver Nuggets.
The Knicks’ over/under of 52.5 is the lowest of the bunch, which should give them plenty of motivation in their title defense. I trust Jalen Brunson and Co. to be the class of the East.
