I like the over for the Raptors’ win total at 45.5 whether or not the trade for Kawhi Leonard becomes official.
Starting with the Leonard caveat makes the most sense. Toronto traded away Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, one first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks for Leonard. The deal has been paused amid the league’s investigation of the Los Angeles Clippers’ alleged salary cap circumvention.
I’m assuming this deal eventually goes through, which should bump Toronto’s win total up a bit. The Raptors have legitimate upside with Leonard in the lineup, as evidenced by their 2019 championship run.
Even without Leonard, I like the Raptors’ floor after winning 46 games last year. Under head coach Darko Rajakovic, Toronto ranked fifth in defensive rating and proved tough to score against.
Scottie Barnes had the best season of his career, finishing fifth in Defensive Player of the Year voting while averaging 18.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game. Adding Leonard would give the Raptors a lethal forward combo with Barnes.
The Raptors have room for improvement against teams above .500 after posting a 22-30 clip last year. If they do that, I like their chances of clearing this win total.
