The NBA is shifting gears as young players develop into stars right in front of our eyes.
This year’s rookie class has some star power and is headlined by Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Scottie Barnes of the Toronto Raptors, and Cade Cunningham of the Detriot Pistons. There is a case to be made for all three of these competitors could emerge from NBA Rookie of the Year odds.
Evan Mobley
Mobley is the current leader in the clubhouse where he is entering today at -225 to win the award. Mobley also boasts the highest handle percentage where his number is at 34.8%, well also sitting with the third-highest ticket percentage at 9.2%.
The former USC Trojan is averaging 14.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while shooting 50.6% from the floor in his rookie campaign.
Scottie Barnes
Mobley’s biggest competition might be Raptors rookie power forward Scottie Barnes. The Florida State product is averaging 15.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game on 49.1% shooting from the floor.
Barnes currently owns a price of +175 to win the award and has a ticket percentage of 10.8% which has him in the second position in that category. In terms of his handle percentage, Barnes sits third at 21.1%.
Cade Cunningham
Cunningham is averaging 17.5 points per game to go along with 5.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds a night. The No. 1 overall pick is currently the biggest liability for the award at +750, where he has a ticket percentage of 55.7% which is over five times that of Barnes who owns the second highest. He also has a handle percentage of 33.2% which is second to only Mobley.
If Cunningham had been able to start the year on time and play more games for the Pistons, there may have been a case for him to take home the award as the number one draft pick from the 2021 NBA draft.
