Timberwolves Win Total Prediction

  • Under 48.5 wins (-110) — Pick made on Aug. 18

I’m more comfortable with the under for my Timberwolves win total prediction at 48.5. Minnesota has trended down in recent seasons, winning 49 games in back-to-back campaigns after a 56-26 finish in 2023-24.

The Timberwolves believed their core had reached its ceiling after two trips to the Western Conference Finals in the past three years. They traded Naz Reid for LaMelo Ball in the offseason. They also sent Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets.

Tim Connelly, Minnesota’s president of basketball operations, is no stranger to bold moves. He traded Karl-Anthony Towns for Randle and Donte DiVincenzo just before the 2024 regular season. The move seemed questionable at the time, but eventually worked out for both sides.

Even with that in mind, I can’t help but be skeptical of the decision to trade for Ball. Since being the No. 3 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Ball has dealt with health issues and contributed little to on-court success.

So, the Charlotte Hornets sending Ball away right after he played 72 games en route to a play-in berth is certainly notable.

The Ball trade was intended to give Anthony Edwards a secondary creator. When Ball is healthy, I think that will work, even if the duo leans more into a 3-point variance formula.

But if Ball has any health issues again, Minnesota won’t have the depth to maintain a 50-win pace. The Wolves are counting on a huge jump from Jaden McDaniels while hoping Rudy Gobert doesn’t age as their top rim protector.

It all seems like too big of a risk, but I’m fascinated to see how this season unfolds in Minnesota.
