Saint Peter’s Cinderella run was extended after Jaden Ivey’s potential game-tying three-pointer fell short at the buzzer in their Sweet 16 matchup. The Big Ten’s national championship drought was also extended with Ivey’s misfire.
If preseason national championship odds at the online sportsbook are any indication, ending the drought at 22 years with a title in the 2023 NCAA Tournament might be challenging.
2023 National Championship Odds
As of June 8, no Big Ten teams have national championship odds better than +2500, and only three teams have odds better than +5000.
Purdue is not one of those teams; after losing Ivey and other key contributors, the Boilermakers are buried at +5000, tied with four other teams for the 22nd-best odds. Purdue has never won a national title, hasn’t appeared in the title game since 1969, and has advanced beyond the Sweet 16 only once in Matt Painter’s 18 seasons as head coach.
Michigan State is one of the four teams tied with Purdue at +5000. The Spartans, the last Big Ten team to win a title (2000), haven’t reached the title game since 2009.
Here’s a look at 2023 national championship odds for each Big Ten team:
