Two of the best guards in college basketball plan to transfer for the 2023-24 season: Baylor’s LJ Cryer and Oral Roberts’ Max Abmas.
Abmas entered the portal on Monday, while Cryer plans to enter the portal, ESPN’s Jeff Borzello reported on Monday. Neither have set a timeline for making a transfer decision, nor have they released a list of visits or potential landing spots.
Cryer is a former four-star recruit who played a small role on Baylor’s 2021 national championship team before averaging 13.5 points in an injury-shortened 2021-22 season. He then averaged 15 points and shot 41.5% from three last season in leading the Bears to 23 wins and a third-place finish in the Big 12.
Abmas will be arguably the most sought-after player in the portal this offseason, several college basketball insiders said on Monday.
As a sophomore in 2020-21, he led the nation in scoring (24.5 points per game) and led the Golden Eagles to the Sweet 16. He averaged more than 21 points in each of the last two years.
Abmas’ entrance into the portal came 13 days after Oral Roberts’ head coach Paul Mills left for Wichita State. Mills was replaced just one day later by former assistant coach Russell Springmann.
