On Monday, it was reported Dusty May would be leaving the University of Michigan to take the job as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

This comes just a few months after winning the national championship.

The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster hopped on a stream to give their initial thoughts, where Goodman noted May wasn’t Dallas’ first choice.

“I am surprised. I am not shocked,” Goodman said. “He was in the mix with Dallas, but he was down the list – at least one down the list.  According to my sources, Jon Scheyer was above Dusty May on the list, and he decided to stay at Duke. Then, they went to Dusty May. I thought Dusty was maybe further down the list, maybe three or four.

“… This is a guy 3.5 years ago was anonymous. He was at FAU, didn’t really do anything at FAU and then he goes on that unbelievable run to the Final Four, takes the Michigan job and in year two ends up winning the national title this past year.”

Goodman believes May is in a solid spot in Dallas.

“I think Dusty May always thought this was a dream to go to the NBA,” he said. “Maybe not even a dream. Now, it was reality and not only was it reality, but it is not a [crappy] NBA job. It is a NBA job with, let’s face it, potentially one of the top five players in the NBA in Cooper Flagg on your team, and you have some other pieces. … For Dusty May, this was something he could not pass up.”
