Mechanics of High-Scoring College Basketball Teams

If you are planning to dabble in college basketball betting, there are some footnotes to keep in mind for high-scoring teams like the ones mentioned above.

There’s more than one way to score a lot of points. Teams can shoot a lot of 3s or create a lot of free throw opportunities. They can play really fast, or they can be really efficient with the possessions that they do have.

The mechanics of how a team scores a lot of points can actually generate different reactions from the market.

As an example, consider a team that’s in a hot shooting phase. The market will eventually start to look for regression to the mean, which could lead to unders and no-covers as the team fails to meet its own previous mean expectations.

Compare that to a team that plays with a really fast tempo or shoots the ball quickly inside of each possession. The shooting percentages might go up or down, but the existence of more possessions on average would likely be seen as a more sustainable path to regular offense.

Always look closely at team mechanics when handicapping teams or games. KenPom can be a really helpful tool for evaluating these components.
